How to Connect Claude AI to Your Shopify Customer Support

Claude is one of the most capable AI models for writing natural, instruction-following replies. Here's how to wire it directly into your Shopify support inbox so it handles customer emails automatically — with live order data.

Most store owners who look into AI customer support end up in the same place: they want something that actually reads the customer's email, understands what they're asking, looks up the relevant order, and writes a reply that sounds like a real person — not a template.

Claude, the AI model built by Anthropic, is particularly good at this. It's strong at following detailed written instructions without drifting, writing in a warm and natural tone, and handling edge cases carefully rather than confidently saying the wrong thing.

Chepa uses Claude as its AI engine. This guide walks through how to connect it to your Shopify store so Claude is handling your support inbox within about ten minutes.

Why Claude specifically

For customer support, the model choice matters more than people expect. The most common failure modes with AI support bots are:

  • Ignoring instructions. The model answers the customer's question but forgets to mention tracking, or promises a refund when the policy says exchanges only.
  • Robotic tone. Correct information, but phrased in a way that immediately signals automation.
  • Overconfidence. When the model doesn't know something, it guesses instead of asking or deferring.

Claude handles all three of these better than most alternatives. It follows system-level instructions closely, writes naturally, and tends to acknowledge uncertainty rather than fabricate. For something customer-facing, that combination matters.

How it works end-to-end

When a customer emails your support inbox, here's what happens:

  1. Chepa picks up the new email from your Gmail or IMAP inbox.
  2. Claude reads the email and decides whether it needs a reply — it skips newsletters, automated notifications, and anything that isn't a genuine customer message.
  3. If it needs a reply, Chepa pulls the customer's order history from your Shopify store using their email address.
  4. Claude composes a reply using your instructions, the email content, and the live Shopify order data.
  5. The reply goes out after a configurable delay — from your Gmail address, in the same thread.

If the email involves something Claude shouldn't handle alone — a refund dispute, a legal threat, a situation your instructions don't clearly cover — it forwards the email to your escalation address instead of attempting a reply.

Step 1 — Create a Chepa account

Go to chepa.lol/register and create a free account. The free plan gives you 15 emails/month — enough to run real customer emails through the full pipeline and verify that Claude's replies match your expectations before you commit to anything.

Step 2 — Connect your inbox

From the Connections page, click Connect Gmail and go through the Google OAuth flow. Select the Gmail account you use for customer support. Once authorized, Chepa starts monitoring that inbox for new emails.

If your support email uses a custom domain (e.g. support@yourstore.com) through Zoho, Outlook, or another provider, use the IMAP/SMTP option instead. You'll enter your server hostname, port, username, and password.

Step 3 — Link your Shopify store

On your connection page, click Link Shopify. You'll need to create a private app in your Shopify admin to generate API credentials — the setup page walks through this step by step, but it takes about two minutes.

Once linked, Claude automatically pulls each customer's order history when composing a reply. A customer asking about their shipment gets a reply that references their actual order number, ship date, and tracking link — not a generic "please check your email" response.

You can also enable Discount codes in settings, which lets Claude generate a unique 10% off code as a goodwill gesture when a customer is upset about a delay or issue. The code is created in Shopify and included in the reply automatically.

Step 4 — Write your instructions for Claude

This is the most important step. Claude follows the instructions you write — so the quality of the instructions directly determines the quality of the replies.

Think of it as a briefing document for a new support hire. Write out:

  • What you sell and who your customers are
  • Your return and refund policy — exact window, conditions, and process
  • Shipping times and carriers
  • Common situations and how to handle them — e.g. "If a customer says their package was marked delivered but they didn't receive it, ask them to check with neighbors and contact their local carrier before we open a claim."
  • What Claude should never promise — e.g. "Never commit to a specific refund timeline. Never say we will resend an item without escalating to the team first."
  • Tone — e.g. "Warm and direct. Use the customer's first name. No corporate phrasing."

The more concrete and specific your instructions, the better. Claude reads them literally — if you write vague guidance, you'll get vague replies. If you write specific policies with specific language, you'll get replies that match exactly.

Step 5 — Test before going live

Use the Test your bot section on your connection page. Paste in a realistic customer email, optionally enter a customer email address to pull live Shopify order data, and hit send. Within a few seconds you'll see exactly what Claude would reply, plus whether it would escalate the email.

Run a few test cases that reflect your typical inbox: a shipping question, a return request, an upset customer. Adjust your instructions based on what you see, then test again until the replies match what you'd write yourself.

Step 6 — Enable and monitor

Toggle the bot on. Claude starts handling incoming emails immediately. Replies go out after the delay you configured — the default is a random interval that makes responses feel natural rather than instant.

Check the Conversations dashboard in the first few days. Every thread shows what Claude replied and whether anything was escalated. If you notice a pattern — a type of email where the replies aren't quite right — go back and add more specific guidance to your instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Does Chepa use Claude AI?

Yes. Chepa is powered by Claude, built by Anthropic. Claude reads each email, pulls Shopify order context, and composes replies following your instructions.

Why Claude instead of ChatGPT or another model?

Claude is particularly strong at following detailed written instructions without drifting, writing in a natural tone, and handling edge cases carefully. For customer-facing replies where accuracy and tone both matter, it tends to produce better results.

Can I control exactly what Claude says?

Yes — through your bot instructions. Claude operates strictly within the context you provide. If your instructions say never promise refunds, it won't. If they say always use the customer's first name, it will.

What if Claude gets something wrong?

Use the escalation email setting. For anything sensitive or ambiguous, Claude forwards to you instead of replying. You can also review all past replies in the dashboard and tighten your instructions based on what you see.

How much does it cost?
